Albums of 2018/19?

Postby TheAlex » Sun Feb 10, 2019 10:22 pm

Maybe it's a bad time to ask considering I still haven't updated my favourite albums of 2018 list (the last thing I need is more albums to listen to), but were there any that stood out for BSP fans?

How about 2019? I've not much idea what's upcoming, but my 2019 so far has been dominated by post-rock/ambient with Old Solar, Mono, The Sun Burns Bright and 36. So I need some variety!

I'm excited to hear what John Peel-favourite Melys do with their first album in 14 years.

Good idea to have a rolling thread so fellow BSP heads can recommend good music because if you like bsp you clearly know your stuff.

2018 favourites: Low - Double Negative, Just Mustard - Wednesday, Light Foils - Chambers, Minami Deutsch - With Dim Light, Beak - >>>, Woven Skull - woven skull, Sleep - The Sciences....That's all I can think of.

2019: Early doors but some crackers out already. It Won't Be Like This All The Time from The Twilight Sad is a belter and will take some beating in the end of year polls.

Happy In The Hollow from Toy excellent.

De Facto by Lorelle Meets The Obsolete is a good one.

Deerhunter's new album, Why Hasn't Everything Disappeared is good, but not a patch on some of their older stuff. After listening to it for a few day's a lot I found myself going back and listening to Weird Era over and over again instead.

EDIT: Listening to Hollow Earth by Pye Corner Audio all morning and Its wonderful.

I've only bought three new albums this year so far and two of them were on Rock Action. Obviously The Twilight Sad's is outstanding, maybe a little more commercial musically than previous outings but oddly darker than ever. On fucking outstanding live form at the moment too, I would say go and see them next week but they've sold out all the dates, I'll be at all 3 (not including the warm-up at Tuts cos I can't get there midweek) if anyone else is. Meanwhile veterans Swervedriver have somehow also ended up at Rock Action and also made a rather miserable but excellent album there. Elsewhere Sonic Cathedral keep quietly slipping out excellence, Lorelle Meets The Obsolete being their latest delight.

Looking forward to the new Teeth Of The Sea which is currently waiting for me at my local record shop, as I said elsewhere, I miss record releases being Mondays, it was like a reward for getting through the day. Friday releases just amplify the whole "is it time to go home yet" thing...
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"
And there she was....

Noted ;-)

Highlights of 2019 for me so far...

James Yorkston - The Route to the Harmonium (his best since When The Haar Rolls In)
Wild Powwers - Skin
St.James Infirmary - Affidavits of Unease

It's been a weekend of trumpet laced post-electronica round ours, and not often you get to say that is it? Courtesy of the aforementioned new Teeth Of The Sea album (excellent) and recent release from Cosey Fanni Tutti. Yay for trumpets!

Also, not an album and not of 2019, but been properly hooked on Monoganon after getting his EP as part of that Lost Map Visitations thing and watching him do it live on Sunday.
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"
And there she was....

Enjoying the new Yorkston and Teeth of the Sea. My favourite of last year was Adam Stafford's Fire Behind the Curtain - really excellent largely instrumental LP.

Also, if you're not averse to downbeat bloke with a guitar stuff, I really liked Jim Clements' A Failure.

WHY DID NONE OF YOU CUUNTS OR ANYONE ELSE TELL ME ROBERT FORSTER HAD A NEW ALBUM OUT???

Up in Glasgow for the weekend, went in Monorail for Snapped Ankles and they didn't have it, but there was The Greatest Living Australian's latest so I left happy.

Not played it yet, though. I've been out at gigs 17 of the last 18 nights because February is the new "what the fuck happened". Also, the three Twilight Sad gigs involved have almost destroyed me...

So far, this thread is full of albums I think I should love but don't.

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete are one of those bands I want to love. I think maybe I wanted them to do more like What's Holding You? but they didn't.

I've enjoyed the Teeth of the Sea album without anything particularly grabbing me.

The Twilight Sad and Swervedriver are another two I want to like. I don't know how much time to invest in albums these days, because if I don't love one or two songs on first listen, I usually don't end up loving the albums, and I could be listening to neglected past favourites instead.

Hammock are releasing one 20ish-minute track a month this year. I like both tracks so far, but I'm not too enamoured at having a 4-hour album by the end of the year: https://shop.hammockmusic.com/album/undercurrents

As I've been so negative, here are some 2019 singles I've enjoyed that promise good albums: Collapse Under the Empire and Fat White Family.

Edit: Based on Blackout's outburst, I'm checking out Robert Forster from this thread first. Hopefully I like the rest of the album as much as the first song!

Got the documentary on DVD for Christmas, it's absolutely wonderful

Except for the thing that nobody wanted reminding about....

Oh, you know. THAT picture. I can't find it on the internet, but you know, the underpants one.

My new EP, The Yeoman's Tears, is out now as download (CD will be included in the new album bundle in May)

https://smikkelbaard.bandcamp.com/album ... mans-tears

It's a four-track musical imaging of a Sussex soldier's return from The Great War and the tragedies, and redemption, that follow.

For those interested in BSP-links, Smikkelbaard is co-run by our very own Lancashire Fusilier.

Edit: It's on Spotify now too.....
