Biggest shithole you've ever been too?

Postby Szabo » Thu Jul 23, 2009 9:16 pm

The huge Klong Toey Slum in Bangkok is pretty grim. As is Stoke-on-Trent.

Probably a toss up between the two of those for me.

Maryport. We did however get to watch a man fall off his horse while riding across the beach. He was OK and got straight back on, so good for him.

Mansfield is grim, it's like a downmarket Bury with a worse market.

Depends ....

Phnom Penh in Cambodia is filthy, dirty, noisy and smelly, but rather cool at the same time.

As for the UK, it would have to be Bratfud or Blackpool. Total Shitholes from what I have seen of them.

Frizzington, Rowrah, Cleator Moor - pretty much the whole of the A5086 between Cockermouth and Egremont. And yet just a few miles to the east ...

Scunthorpe: A Tour, In Pictures

On arrival, this is the vista which greets us...

Image

It seems there have been some unpleasant goings on...

Image

One of the town's hottest nightspots, the Schnapps Bar. Not shown: A4 posters on pillars depicting the faces of people whose ASBOs preclude their visiting said establishment. I am really not making this up.

Image

Blackpool? What's wrong with....

Image

...oh yeah. Chippy, strip club, watching cheap fireworks in the rain. Yep, you may have a point.

Further afield (I'm not as exotically travelled as some of you) Eastern Europe has some particularly unattractive places. We had a great time at OFF Festival last summer, but you probably wouldn't go to Katowice for the sightseeing...

Image

Out-shithole-ing all this lot, however, is Duisburg, Germany, a city entirely constructed of motorways and concrete. This may, admittedly, be partly thanks to the RAF (it was one of the most comprehensively bombed cities in the whole war, on either side) but apparently the place was horrible long before that, spending most of the 19th century as home to Europe's largest sulphuric acid factory. These days it boasts a very large number of blast furnaces (and a rusty industrial port) and the air is heavy and brown. Sadly I do not have any online photos, but you genuinely couldn't capture the sheer misery of walking round the place anyway.
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"
And there she was....

Indeed, though it's a jewel compared to Sutton in Ashfield.

But my vote goes to Hinckley, Nuneaton's downmarket neighbour.

(Though in fariness I've not been to any of these places in a few years - and don't plan to - they might have improved...)

I dont like to knock my home town, but Boston, Lincolnshire is a total shithole.

Recently labelled the most obese town in britain, scene of the 2004 world cup riots following Portugals defeat of England, 30 % of the population is from Eastern Europe which, unfortunately stirs up racial tensions. Their accent is appalling ("right" is pronounced "reeeeeet"), they call themselves "yellowbellies", there are no hills and market days bring out the freaks.
How would they survive back in the wild?

I remember when BSP played Mansfield Town Mill in 2003. I arrived in the middle of the afternoon. It was the hottest day of the year and the whole town appeared to be drunk! Scary place, but not particularly a dump.

North of the border, Sighthill near Edinburgh is pretty grim and the whole central Scotland strip is an eyesore - Coatbridge anyone?

No, it's definitely a dump. My brother's school insures the teachers cars against the inevitable keyings, tyre slashings and window breakings, just to encourage them to work there because they all drive in, being wise enough to not actually live in Mansfield...

Blimey - I did teaching practice at the school there one winter 15+ years ago before abandoning my PGCE. It's an empty, purposeless part of the country and no mistake. The sea seems to agree and is making every effort to save the inhabitants from themselves by stealing the land. So bleak though that it had a certain nobilty, even in its vacant arcades and fairs.
