I have a dim recollection of a previous "biggest shithole" thread where I mentioned North Woolwich. I'm from Manchester and we used visit my gran in the concrete horror of Hulme; I've lived in London for 20 years and am familiar with the scraggier ends of Brixton, Peckham and Tottenham... but walking around North Woolwich with GTW in broad daylight, we were both gradually engulfed by a feeling of impending doom that neither of us had ever experienced before. Nothing happened, nobody said anything or even paid us any attention. But we couldn't get out of there fast enough.
I suppose we should go back to see if we still have the same reaction. But I don't know if I could summon up the courage.
Congratulations in incorporating, possibly for the first time in living memory, the words "Hull" and "cultural scene" in the same paragraph.
I can only assume that your colleague was born and bred in a United Nations refugee camp if she can accentuate the positives of Hull.
If you want culture in Hull,I would suggest buying some yoghurt.
Come,come nuclear bombs...

See my Katowice picture on page 1. Poland, admittedly, but culturally and indeed visually not dissimilar...

And what is wrong with Fenners?
Actually, I have associations with a factory in Wisbech..Odd bunch, but nowhere near as bad as Kings Lynn

I'm sure I posted this on here before, but I had to change trains at Katowice once and had an hour to kill on a deserted platform late at night. A little local train pulled in and a gang of about 30 drunken skinheads, all with DMs and the full works, piled out of the train and started smashing up the station. I hid.
Not a place I'd like to revisit.
