Is it Cologne with its great cathedral?
Milan with its glamour and its pace?
London with its river and its bridges?
Lisbon with its beauty and its grace?

Is it Dublin with its culture and its wit?
Madrid with its market square?
Paris with its bustling cafes?
Hull with its musical flair?

I have a dim recollection of a previous "biggest shithole" thread where I mentioned North Woolwich. I'm from Manchester and we used visit my gran in the concrete horror of Hulme; I've lived in London for 20 years and am familiar with the scraggier ends of Brixton, Peckham and Tottenham... but walking around North Woolwich with GTW in broad daylight, we were both gradually engulfed by a feeling of impending doom that neither of us had ever experienced before. Nothing happened, nobody said anything or even paid us any attention. But we couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I suppose we should go back to see if we still have the same reaction. But I don't know if I could summon up the courage.

Congratulations in incorporating, possibly for the first time in living memory, the words "Hull" and "cultural scene" in the same paragraph.
I can only assume that your colleague was born and bred in a United Nations refugee camp if she can accentuate the positives of Hull.
If you want culture in Hull,I would suggest buying some yoghurt.
Come,come nuclear bombs...

Actually, she grew up in East Germany. Make of that what you will.

See my Katowice picture on page 1. Poland, admittedly, but culturally and indeed visually not dissimilar...
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"
And there she was....

The Home Office are sending me to Thurrock & Luton next month. I may have something to add to this thread upon my return.

Poland is indeed pretty grim.
I remember venturing to Lodz in the early eighties when City played Widzew Lodz in the UEFA cup and have vague memories of endless grey apartment blocks, anonymous dual carriageways that seemed to go nowhere and a dreary, browbeaten populace who drank vodka in vast amounts presumably to obliterate the horror of reality.
It was also about minus 20 in March and the cheery highlight of the visit was a trip to the Ghetto Museum where a sullen woman regaled us with harrowing stories of Nazi atrocities and tyranny.
On a brighter note,we got a 2-2 draw, won the home leg and brought home ludicrous quantities of bison grass vodka for seventy pence a bottle.
I would however still rather live in Lodz for eternity than spend a nanosecond in Hull.
James Dean was just a careless driver, and Marilyn Monroe was just a slag...

Spent a few hours at Milton Keynes coach station a few years back. The shop was selling old copies of sub-Heat magazines; that was the most exciting thing about it. Spoiled the holiday a bit knowing we'd have to spend some time there on the way back.

If the rest of MK is like its coach station, it needs bulldozing now.

I'm sure I posted this on here before, but I had to change trains at Katowice once and had an hour to kill on a deserted platform late at night. A little local train pulled in and a gang of about 30 drunken skinheads, all with DMs and the full works, piled out of the train and started smashing up the station. I hid.

Not a place I'd like to revisit.

oi- my ancestors come from Kings Lynn- I've not yet discovered anything untoward about them, unlike the Hull lot who were imprisoned for common assault on an officer of the law, and for dealing in illegal whalebone.
"Even if I saw these names grouped together completely out of context away from here... lets say a set of albums sitting together in a charity shop - I would immediately think of you and no other!"

thanks Gary...

Ouch... It did strike me as a slightly scary place even in broad daylight.

It does, however, boast a ladies' dress shop called TROLL and a tattoo parlour called RECTUM.
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"
