Pulp

Recently bought the double live DVD: Feeling called live - The Park is mine. What a great band. Jarvis Cocker is one of the most underrated artists and lyricists. Don't know if I would really like a reunion (though I never saw them, being too young), but still. Different Class must be one of the most perfect all-around albums.

Where was it recorded? Was it Finsbury Park, about 1997/8?

Thought it was. Around that time, Pulp were possibly my favourite band and that Gig seemed to be the crest of the wave they were riding after Differant Class. If I remember rightly support was provided by catatonia, Bentley Rythimn Ace and The Egg. Personally, I preferred His N Hers. What I find with Jarvis's lyrics is that you seem to be able to always apply your own personal connection.

Probably the second most talented person with the initial JC out there.

Well obviously I wasn't around to witness the real magnitude of their succes being a 7-year old Belgian kid back than. I do remember the success of Disco 2000 and Common People here (which I instantly liked). And I agree with the lyrical power. He has the gift to really say things the way you think of them, but in a witty, intelligent and funny way. It's a pitty they get so few recogniztion these days.

By far my favourite Pulp albums are This Is Hardcore and the the Scott Walker produced We Love Life. Both amazing works of art.

I love reading about Bad Cover Version from that latter album:

Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee, Gary Tibbs and yours truly.

I much prefer the Brixton gig that's also on the DVD....I saw them at Middlesbrough Town Hall just after Different Class was released and indeed they were at that point. Didn't get This Is Hardcore at all back then (I fact it was only in the last few years I really got into it) but loved We Love Life from the second I heard it.
My favourite band from the 90's along with The Divine Comedy and Suede.
In fact it was a Pulp gig at Dalby Forest that I first heard an unkown band called British Sea Power....wonder what happend to them?
I'd write and tell you that I've burnt them all.
But you never send me your address and I've.
I've kept them anyway.

Was it truly that long ago that I was surrounded by thousands of festival goers belting every lyric to Common People "somewhere in a field in Hampshire?' Why does this topic make me feel old?

Ah, how i used to love Pulp. I was very lucky to have been the right age to really appreciate brit pop in the 90s and have seen Pulp 3 times. They were a great band live and Jarvis is an amazing frontman. I've been a little disappointed with how he's calmed down since then but i still admire him.
I think a Pulp reunion would be fun at i can't see it happening

Am I really the only person here who thinks Pulp are somewhat over-rated?

By which I don't mean they're bad, just not that as great as everyone seems to think they are/were. Let's face it, Pulp spent most of the 80s going nowhere, and had to wait til Britpop had lowered the average standard of British indie/guitar music to such an unprecedented rock bottom that they looked great in comparison. Subsequently, Jarvis is considered some kind of national treasure, given his own Meltdown to curate, the lot.

I'm presuming that Avocetboy is referring to Mr Julian Cope, a man considerably more worthy of these accolades (although it's just struck me I have absolutely no idea why I am presuming this, apologies if not, and that wouldn't be my personal answer to that question).

I think you are probably right, maybe something to do with his slightly english eccentric and amiable character and, like Talia said, just good memories of that Britppop era..(Along with Mansun).

Cope is at the top of my tree, not just of JC'S, but of humanity.

Has Copey ever been given a Meltdown? And if not, WHY THE FUCK NOT??! This isn't a personal taste thing by the way, I'm not like a massive Cope fan or anything, but I do believe he doesn't get a fraction of the recogition he almost certainly deserves - and I would love to see the utterly demented line-up he'd probably come up with :)
