All New What Are You Reading Now Thread

Postby NicholasVanWotsisface » Thu Jun 18, 2009 4:12 pm

Seeing as I am here at the moment, I thought I would enquire....

I am on Liver by Will Self. He has an excellent turn of phrase though his stories are a bit contrived.

Just finished this.

It's ace.

I don't do literature or fiction or books without pictures in.

This is probably the last you'll hear from me on this thread :-)
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"
And there she was....

I'm reading The Rings of Saturn by WG Sebald. It's very good so far.

Hamlet! (having just finished Ever After by Graham Swift, which I found a bit heavy-going to be honest).
Kevo or Matthew Wood? Malevolence or good?

I have just finished Brideshead Revisited. Didn't do it for me.

Currently on the go is

Not your average descriptive historical account, rather a really thorough and detailed investigation of how the battle was fought by the 'top brass'. Fascinating stuff, if you like that sort of thing.

And have just begun

Image

First impressions are its been pretty shoddily translated...(some very odd metaphors so far) but should be an interesting read

Bomber Boys by Patick Bishop. Good account of Bomber Command during the war, the writer refers to the Mass Observation archive a fair bit to gauge public opinion.

I'm reading Brighton Rock. I 'read' it for GCSE English several years ago and didn't enjoy it. It's far better this time around.

Stephen Spender - World Within World. It's an autobiography of the poets life mostly in the 1930s, which is great as he came across so many interesting characters like Auden and Isherwood and was in Germany for the rise of the Nazi's and Spain for the civil war, so he really has something to say.

I saw the film of this and thought it was really strange. Couldn't work out if I liked it or not, I thought it would be just like City of God, but it wasn't at all.

On a similar note, the fact that I'll be an uncle in a couple of months prompted me to go into Waterstone's and buy this recently:

If he's very lucky I might even give it to my nephew ;)
