I don't do a lot of that there book reading, but I've just finished this which is brim-full to flooding-over with melancholy reflective stuff and with a surprising amount of death for a book about a not notably treacherous river, all set in BSP's adopted county:

I read mostly short stories these days. Currently on the go is Shimmer Magazine's 2017 anthology, the Writers of the Future Volume 34 anthology, a collection from the 1980s (the first story was by Woody Allen) and some stuff from flashfictiononline.com.

I'm also dipping into Daemon Voices: Essays on Storytelling by Philip Pullman, a book about Africa and The Rough Guide to China in advance of a trip there next month.

as always with the disclaimer that I read popular fiction, I have been reading the Slow Horses spy novels by Mick Herron. Really great and easily the best new thing I have had since discovering Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels a few years ago.
