Why is the bottom buttonhole horizontal on some shirts (the rest of the buttonholes being vertical on the example offered for the consideration of the committee)
So you know when to stop if dressing in the dark?

I think its to enable you to accidently button your button fly boxers to your shirt
How would they survive back in the wild?

Yeah, but what's the alternative? A zip? Ouch.

It's "just a traditional styling detail" apparently, like having three buttons on jacket cuffs, as opposed to one or two on shirts. Mrs SPT reckons it might have had some forgotten root in tailoring, where it's the done thing never to fasten the bottom button. Night be to remind you not to commit a sartorial faux pas.

It's also apparently possibly a hand position thing. Up top your hand is sideways on when buttoning, further down, it's pointing downwards. But still pretty unnecessary.

***STOP PRESS*** The Gentleman's Gazette has been consulted. Scrub the previous answers. It's because its the button that comes under most tension when you sit down, and a sideways hole allows for some expansion.

Are you insinuating that I'm portly?

I think it well-behoves any gentleman of substance to develop a certain shapeliness as they get older. None of this childish running hither and thither in tight-fitting fabrics. It leads to a lack of presence and a badly-hanging trouser.
