In general, clapping along is an abomination. The crowd is rarely in time, and never knows when to stop. So no, just don't.

If people don't know what to do with their hands as gigs I would always put forward holding a pint as a better alternative to a clap along, the up side being it stops this kind of silly thing dead in its tracks and gives you refreshment.
