Kinoteka Polish Film Festival

Postby pomfob » Wed Feb 08, 2017 11:18 pm

Rather surprised no one has posted this yet...

https://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event ... p?ID=21022

To summarise, it's on Wednesday 5 April at the Barbican in London. They're doing the live soundtrack for a selection of classic Polish animations for this specially-commissioned performance, as part of the Kinoteka Polish Film Festival. Tickets go on general sale on Friday 10 February and I'm currently wondering if I can afford it (or rather afford the travel to & accommodation in that there London)...let me get back to you on that one, but don't tell the bank manager, eh?

I'm wondering if it's doable without stopping over, if it's a film thing then 8pm is probably the actual start time, in which case it's probably not more than 2 hours and the 11pm train back to Manchester could work... (pretty sure you have an even later one to Leeds).... I'm thinking "tickets now (or rather tomorrow), logistics later".
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"
And there she was....

So their first live appearance after the album comes out will be an apparently unrelated soundtrack performance. I know the tour kicks off the following night, but this only underscores* why I love 'em so.

*Pun intentional.

Good spot, but yes it looks a bit odd timing and is in no way a low key new album / tour warm up gig! ..

But i guess it was one of them things they said yes to some time ago and it worked out this way, may well pop along which is daft as i can not make any of the other gigs so still don't get to hear the new stuff..

Would be useful to know timings for this.

Obviously with a regular "soundchecks, supports, headliners, maybe an encore" gig that's rarely a practical request but was thinking with this one, what with it being a posh venue and a film show, start and finish times are probably a little more rigid?

I'm sure I am not the only non-London-based potential punter wondering if they'll be able to get the last train, that's all. I intend to come anyway but would be useful to be able to plan a bit.

thanking you kindly on behalf of the "regions".

(fellow punters, please see also my post in the meet ups forum concerning an exhibition at said venue concurrent with this event.)

I have a spare ticket for this as it turns out Mrs Bod does not dig Polish animation, stalls Row B (which i think is the front?) will sell for beer and can pass on tickets on the night as i'm still going ..

and please post a reply in the meet up forum, not here, to keep things nice and tidy ..

Hope no one is taking their young 'uns tomorrow...(pinched from Pale Fox on Facebook, as it was nearer to hand than the email).

Just in case the Barbican email doesn't make it though to everyone who might be affected:

"Please be aware that some of the animations depict potentially disturbing themes of the Holocaust, violence and of a sexual nature, and have been locally classified as a 15. Customers under the age of 15 will not be allowed into the show. If you, or a guest, are under 15, please contact the Box Office, on 020 7638 8891, for a full refund."

Genuinely superb evening. I had no idea what to expect but was blown away by the power of the films and the craft of the music. Well played BSP!

Wow.

Seriously though who would even do that? New album to promote, imminent tour and all the other stuff you have to do, what band in their right mind would go "yeah OK why not also compose a bunch of brand new work to go with some demented animations". and this is why we love them. as I was saying to Lee (aka former forumster Bingo Stevens) just before we went in, it was absolutely brilliant that we had precisely no idea what to expect. the films were themselves fascinating: lots of variety in both form and content, I described it after as "ten flavours of fucked", there was hilarious fucked, surrealist fucked, extremely dark and unsettling fucked, etc. and the music excellent too. Just the whole thing was really why I love them and keep coming back: always innovating, always thinking of the next thing, always a million cuts above their insultingly designated "indie rock" pigeonhole.

add to that lots of good friends, the Barbican now stocking my favourite Icelandic beer and a nice early finish meaning even those of us from completely different cities could fit in a pint before the last train and.... yep.
And I asked, "Are you dreaming about a crow?"

Thanks, here's a review from someone who studied Polish animation and only knew one BSP song beforehand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpqyxcKesU0

I hope they perform this again. One for Sheffield DocFest, perhaps? As it compiles various Polish animations, maybe it could be considered documentary-like?

Me and some other people (I can't exactly really who or when, been a long week) were discussing this, agreeing that the 10 films back to back do form a kind of cultural documentary. Would be nice for them to do it somewhere in the north anyway.

ARE YOU LISTENING, WHICHEVER MEMBER OF THE BAND OR THEIR MANAGEMENT IT IS THAT COMES ON HERE? :)
